Founders Memorial is dedicated.
September 16, 1930
Artist: John Paramino. Architect: Coolidge, Charles A. It is located on Boston Common opposite the corner of Beacon Street and Spruce Street. The figures in the relief include William Blackstone, John Winthrop, Rev. John Wilson, Ann Pollard and an unidentified Native American. The figure of Blackstone is said to bear a strong likeness to James Michael Curley, which may not be surprising since he was mayor of Boston at the time. The monument is dedicated on the 300th anniversary of the founding of Boston. At the ceremony, Edwin Markham reads his “Ode to Boston,” composed for the event. It begins and ends, “Boston, it was not chance / That drew you hither in the world romance, . . .And so we praise O city by the sea, / All you have been and all that you will be!”
